Many of the musical elements in this arrangement represent the conditions on the battlefield at this important time in America's history. The sustained melodic passages represent the smoke lingering above the carnage and destruction and the sometimes-unfinished melodies represent the uncertainty of the war's outcome. The three note, descending figure throughout the piece represents the moaning of the wounded and the final moments of the piece represents our victory over the practice of slavery.
