- Do not play (circle)
- Octave above (8va)
- Octave down (8va basso)
- Warning of something to look out for (eye glasses)
- Mute additions (mute) (open)
- Modulations (key change)
- Difficult keys (Arrows)
- Extended rests (instruments names)
- Unspecified pickups ( written notes and instrument)
- Unwritten dynamics (below vocal)
- Page turns (Fast page turn)
- Solo entrance (alone)
- Duet balance (with tbn.)
- DC,DS Repeat directions (arrows)
- Feel of piece (in 2, in 4 etc.)
- Style indications (even or swing eights)
- Difficult rhythms (hash marks)
- Vocal cues (key words in lyrics)
- Difficult fingering (trill D to E)
- Forgettable accidentals (Bb in key of Bb)
- Repeat signs (Extend Signs)
- Mark only in pencil
- Bring an eraser to your last performance (only you will be removing all of your markings for the next musician)
